History

In February 2011, following an advert in the local newspaper, eight ladies met and decided to form an a cappella group. By the end of that year, that group had grown to over twenty. We now have a chorus of over twenty-five members.

Our founding musical director was Mike Peters, who at that time had over 35 years singing experience with the award winning Great Western Chorus of Bristol. Together with his wife Norma, they educated and advanced our group in the early years. We developed through feedback from acclaimed coaches from the USA and UK.

We are a non-competitive chorus, but have performed in numerous concerts, with a variety of musicians. These include the RAF Association Band, the Ukulele Funhouse Orchestra and the WorleWind Band. In May 2015 we went to Germany as part of the town twinning exchange programme and sang with the Gospel voices of Hildesheim. In return, they visited and stayed with us in Weston culminating in a successful concert in St Paul’s church. We have sung at flower shows and various care homes, entered the Weston Festival of Music, the Highbridge Music Festival and have taken part in the Mid Somerset Festival in Bath.

In 2018 our musical director Mike stepped down and we were lucky to have him replaced by Stephen Derrick who also sings with the Great Western Chorus. He has been a member of GWC for the past 35 years and was also their deputy MD for over 20 years. Stephen is a former music teacher and a founder member of the Harry Browns, a shanty group. Stephen, together with his wife Helen, are continuing to coach, develop and progress our group, to more advanced levels.
